In 2018, Congress passed the Agriculture Improvement Act to expand hemp as an agricultural product and support farmers. Unfortunately, the legislation created a dangerous loophole the\u00a0 hemp industry has exploited to sell potent, synthetic THC, commonly referred to as \u201cgas station weed\u201d, without any federal regulation. Due to accidental exposures, this led to an 1,375%<\/a> increase in children hospitalized from 2017-202. These tragedies are preventable.\u00a0<\/p>

Independent testing<\/a> has also found mold, pesticides, heavy metals, and residual chemicals in these products. While often marketed as \u201cnatural\u201d or \u201clow-dose\u201d options, the majority of hemp-derived THC is synthetic, which can be up to 30 times more potent than natural THC. Packaging frequently mislabeled and fails to warn consumers of these risks.<\/p>

To protect children and consumers, Congress closed the loophole in 2025. But now the hemp industry is lobbying to stay unregulated, and on September 1, 2026 Congress passed an extension of the loophole.<\/p>

Synthetic hemp-derived THC products continue to be sold without age restrictions and in packaging designed to attract children that they can easily open. Our children are paying the price.<\/p>

Congress must put our children first and keep the loophole closed without delay or extension.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Every parent deserves to know that the toys, bottles, car seats, and pajamas they bring home are safe, but the laws meant to guarantee this haven\u2019t kept pace with the science.<\/p>

Our nation’s core chemical safety law, the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, allowed tens of thousands of chemicals already in use to stay on the market without ever being tested for safety. In 2008, Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act capped lead and restricted certain phthalates, yet its phthalate limits cover only toys and child care articles, leaving everyday items like clothing and backpacks unprotected. The 2016 Lautenberg Act reforms were a step in the right direction, but parents are still waiting on the EPA’s reviews of existing chemicals. And there is still no federal ban on PFAS “forever chemicals” or toxic flame retardants in children’s products, despite links to hormone disruption, developmental harm, and cancer.<\/p>

It’s time to put children’s health first. We are calling on Congress and federal regulators to modernize outdated safety laws, close the loopholes that leave children’s products unregulated, and get PFAS and toxic flame retardants out of products made for kids.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For millions of children, the internet is where they learn, play, and connect with friends. Now more than ever, we must ensure it stays that way.<\/p>

In 2025, the CyberTipline run by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children received 21.3 million reports that included more than 61.8 million images, videos and other files related to suspected child sexual exploitation. That same year, reports of online enticement reached 1.4 million. In the age of AI and rapid technological advances, the internet has become an essential part of our children\u2019s lives. Yet our core internet laws date back to the 1990s.<\/p>

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 covers only children under 13, leaving teenagers largely unprotected. The 2024 REPORT Act requires online platforms to report online enticement and child sex trafficking in the same way they report child sexual abuse material, but parents and children deserve proactive legislation.<\/p>

We are calling on Congress to finally pass strong kids’ online safety legislation that centers children\u2019s safety, extends protections to teens, and gives law enforcement and child protection organizations the resources they need to keep up with emerging threats.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
